Special Needs Family Center
R.A.P Camp Xtra Sunday Funday Autism Program Empowered Parents Workshop Healthy Families Swim and Skills The Special Need Family Center (SNFC) is a specialized department for families and their exceptional children. By bringing special needs children into our center, the H.E.S. fulfills its mission to embrace and celebrate diversity, and provide programs that minimize stigmatization.
At the SNFC, our goal and our joy are to enhance the lives of these truly special children and their families.
Reaching Academic Potential (R.A.P.) After School Program--starts September 6, 2012
The R.A.P. program serves children with a wide spectrum of emotional and physical disorders, and is staffed by a certified special education teacher and a licensed social worker. The R.A.P. room eliminates the distractions found in the larger after school rooms, and provides one-on-one academic support.
Sunday Funday Autism Program - starts October 21, 2012
Sunday Funday is a ten-week program for children five through twelve with high- functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and is designed to build self-esteem, communication, cognitive and social skills, and physical abilities. In addition to including the children in the warm and friendly atmosphere of our center, Sunday Funday offers a much-needed respite for care-giving families.

At Camp Xtra, special needs children enjoy a small group setting with their counselors . Activities which promote self-esteem, social and communication skills, physical abilities, and cognitive development include:
Camp Xtra also provides a hot lunch when children are at the center, a cold lunch when the children are not (such as field trips), and bus service to and from the H.E.S.
Camp Xtra hours: Monday — Friday, 9:00 a.m. through 4:15 p.m. (excluding transportation).

SNFC Vacation Program
For children with autism, cerebral palsy, attention deficit disorders or other special needs. This program includes arts & crafts, computer fun, karate, physical education and more!
Free workshops provide parents and community members with information and a discussion on specific topics and concerns. Topics include: autism, how to get an IEP for your child, how to get services for your child in the public school system and behavior management. This series takes place on a weekday evening. Parents who attend may bring their children and H.E.S. provides a light dinner and activities for the children.
Autism Parents' Support Group - starts September 13, 2012
Affected by or confronting autism? You are not alone. The Autism Parent Support Group is free and designed to support parents, caregivers and legal guardians with children on the autism spectrum. Participants are given the opportunity to share knowledge and experiences with each other. While the support group is in session, children and siblings can participate in recreational and social skills building activities. The Autism Parent Support Group meets the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM.

CLASSP High School / College Internship Program
The Consortia for Learning and Service to Special Populations (CLASSP) was created in response to the growing interests of the special needs community, and is a joint project of nine New York community-based organizations. CLASSP has helped more than 140 high school students transform the lives of disabled children and receive valuable job experience.
CLASSP is a year-long internship that provides select high school and college students with the skills to work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. (Students receive one college credit and a stipend on completion.)

In conjunction with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), H.E.S. provides FREE social work, counseling and advocacy services. H.E.S. also provides assistance with WIC, Food Stamps, HEAP and Health Insurance.

OPWDD Mainstream Program for Senior Citizens
The Senior Day Recreation Service is open to developmentally disabled senior citizens (55+) living in Southeast Brooklyn who would like to participate in a fun-filled social and recreational programs. Program will give participants the opportunity to interact with each other and form a sense of community. Free transportation and lunch are provided. Bilingual staff is available.

OPWDD Sunday - starts October 14, 2012
Sunday Recreation Service engages developmentally disabled adult consumers in weekend activities and provides respite for the family caregivers. The Sunday Recreation Service is open to consumers, 18 years and older, living with family caregivers in the greater Southeast Brooklyn area. Consumers should be high functioning moderately or mildly mentally retarded or developmentally disabled adults. Transportation may be available depending on proximity to our facility.

OPWDD Swim N Skills - starts October 23, 2012
Swimming Program for children ages 4-15 who have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and meet OPWDD's eligibility requirements. Each child will receive individualized swim instruction and an individual counselor. Parents will receive ABA training and optional swim time with children. Swimming activities will target encouragement of positive social behavior, including sharing, language growth and self-esteem. Children will learn appropriate behaviors and form positive relationships by bonding with their buddies. Healthy Snack and Transportation Provided.
